01 — The rankWhat this grade asks of you

White signifies innocence — a student with no previous knowledge of Taekwondo. Everything on this page is a building block for something later, which is why the panel cares far more about how you do it than how hard you do it.

Syllabus poomsaeKibon Il-Jang — combined basic movements
Time in gradeNot specified — at the instructor's discretion, minimum two sessions per week
Grading to9th Kup — Yellow Stripe
New at this rankEverything. Attention and bowing, ready position, forward and horse riding stance, the first five kicks
Also requiredTuition up to date on the day of testing
Eligibility

Minimums are not entitlements. Meeting them makes you eligible to be considered. Instructor recommendation is required in every case, and is based on standard rather than on time served.

How this grade is judged

Techniques are called at the instructor's discretion. Grading depends on attendance and attitude as much as on technique. At this rank a slow, correct technique scores above a fast, wrong one — every time.

02 — KibonGeneral & basic techniques

The general list is examined first, standing still, before anything moves. Get these wrong and everything built on them is wrong too.

General

  • Attention position and correct bowing position
  • Ready position and breathing control
  • Forward stance Ap Kubi · Horse riding stance Juchum Seogi
  • Stepping foot to foot · stepping forward, turning
  • Balance exercises
  • Formation of the feet for front kick, side kick and roundhouse kick
  • Kicking, then regaining balance
How to read the sides

Every sequence is written left-lead — left foot forward — and is mirrored on command. Stances are named by the forward foot: "left Ap Kubi" means the left foot is forward.

Practise LEFT-LEAD
Combination 1From horse-riding stance Juchum SeogiPunching
  1. High punch Olgul Jireugi ×10, alternating hands
  2. Middle punch Momtong Jireugi ×10, alternating hands
  3. Low punch Arae Jireugi ×10, alternating hands

Graded on the hip, not the arm. The fist rotates in the last quarter of the travel and the opposite hand returns to the belt at the same instant.

Combination 2From horse-riding stance Juchum SeogiBlocking
  1. Low block Arae Makki ×10
  2. Middle block Momtong Makki ×10
  3. High block Olgul Makki ×10
  4. Inward middle block Momtong An Makki ×10

The stance does not rise between repetitions. Graded on whether the knees stay out as the arms work.

Combination 3From Left forward stance, moving forward Ap KubiOn the move
  1. Every punch above, stepping forward — ×5 each
  2. Every block above, stepping forward — ×5 each
  3. The hand and the foot finish together, not one after the other

The same techniques, now travelling. Step 3 is the whole point — it is the principle the entire syllabus is built on and it is examined again at every grade above this one.

03 — ChagiBasic kicking

All done from fighting stance, moving forward, resetting to the starting position after each set. Five repetitions each.

  • Front high rising kick
  • Crescent kick — An Chagi (in to out) and Bakkat Chagi (out to in)
  • Front kick — Ap Chagi
  • Side kick — Yeop Chagi
  • Roundhouse kick — Dollyo Chagi
What the panel watches

The knee comes up before the foot goes out, and the kicking foot returns to the chamber before it lands. Regaining balance is examined as part of the kick — a kick you fall out of has not been performed.

05 — HosinsulSelf defence

Theme at this rank: escaping a wrist grab. Three techniques, and the two rules that make all of them work.

  • One arm grab — release
  • Grab both wrists — release
  • Grab both wrists — defence
How the release works
  • Straight arm grab (right on left, left on right) — circle towards the middle of your body and escape through the thumb.
  • Cross arm grab (right on right, left on left) — circle towards the outside of your body and escape through the thumb.
Safety

Releases are practised at partner speed with the grip released on request. Nothing at this rank is applied to a joint under load. The throat, neck, temple, eyes and spine are never contacted, at any speed, at any rank.
