01 — The rankWhat this grade asks of you

Green stripe is the crossing out of the beginner ranks. You now hold two very similar patterns at once and have to keep them separate, and the two hand techniques at this rank look almost identical to a spectator — a small change in starting position turns a defensive movement into an offensive one.

Syllabus poomsaeTaegeuk Sam-Jang — 20 movements, trigram Ri ☲
Time in grade3 months · 25–30 classes, minimum two sessions per week
Grading to6th Kup — Green Belt
New at this rankJebipoom Mok Chigi · fingertip thrust · the back kick · breakfall from squatting
Belt meaningGreen signifies the plant's growth as Taekwondo skills begin to develop
Eligibility

A minimum of three months from the previous kup grade to be recommended for the 6th Kup grading. Minimums are not entitlements.

Theory — hand and foot finish together

When you perform a hand technique while stepping forward, the hand and the foot must finish together. This builds on power generation, introduced at yellow stripe, and kinetic linking, introduced at yellow belt.

If moving forward generates more power, and having the feet firmly planted generates more power, then the optimum moment to strike is the exact moment the movement finishes and the feet are settling. So a hand technique lands in the same split second the foot does — not before, and not after.

What the panel is looking for

The kick at this rank is the hallmark of Taekwondo and is hard to do properly — the standing foot ends up facing 180° away from the opponent. You are also asked to show a range of kicks while holding your balance and your distance, and while staying concerned for your partner's safety.

02 — KibonHand & combination techniques

Five combinations, five repetitions each, both sides, plus basic techniques at the instructor's discretion. Called by number, performed without demonstration.

How to read the sides

Every sequence is written left-lead — left foot forward — and is mirrored on command. Stances are named by the forward foot. The lead hand blocks and the rear hand strikes unless a step says otherwise.

Practise LEFT-LEAD
Combination 1From Left back stance Dwit KubiBlock to thrust
  1. Knife-hand middle guarding block Sonnal Momtong Goduro Makki
  2. Shift forward into left forward stance Ap Kubi
  3. Right pressing palm-heel block Batangson Nullyeo Makki with left flat spear-hand thrust Pyeonsonkeut Jireugi — palm pressing block with fingertip thrust, indicated

The pressing hand is what makes the thrust land safely. Graded on the two hands arriving together — a thrust that outruns the press is scored as an attack, not a technique.

Combination 2From Left forward stance Ap KubiSwallow form
  1. Swallow-form neck strike Jebipoom Mok Chigi — left rising knife-hand block Sonnal Ollyeo Makki rising as the right inward knife-hand strike Sonnal An Chigi arrives at the neck line, indicated
  2. Both arms move on one turn of the waist

The signature technique of Sam-Jang. Scored on simultaneity: the rising block and the strike are one movement performed by two arms, not two movements performed in order.

Combination 3From Left back stance Dwit KubiKick from back stance
  1. Left outer-forearm middle block Momtong Bakkat Makki
  2. Right back-leg high front kick Ap Chagi
  3. Land forward and execute a left inward middle block Momtong An Makki

Kicking off the back leg from a back stance means the weight is already on the kicking leg. Graded on whether the candidate re-weights before kicking rather than falling into it.

Combination 4From Left forward stance Ap KubiDouble punch
  1. Left inward middle block Momtong An Makki
  2. Double punch Dubeon Jireugiright hand first
  3. Left hand completes the double punch

The double punch is Sam-Jang's rhythm engine. Both punches land on the same line, from the same stance, with no drift forward between them.

Combination 5From Instructor's call (any stance)Basics on call
  1. Any punch, strike, block or stance from this rank or below, named in Korean and performed on command
  2. Named correctly first, then performed — not the other way round

The Korean name is graded as heavily as the movement. From this rank the examiner may call in Korean without translation.

Safety overlay

The neck-line strike in Combination 2 and the fingertip thrust in Combination 1 are indicated to the line and stopped. Under-13 candidates substitute a Momtong Bandae Jireugi and lose no marks. The throat, neck, temple, eyes and spine are never contacted, at any speed, at any rank.

Breakfall

  • Falling to the right side from a squatting position
  • Falling to the left side from a squatting position

03 — ChagiKicking & footwork

All from fighting stance, moving forward, resetting to the starting position after each set. Five repetitions each.

  • Combination kicking — axe kick, roundhouse kick and spinning hook kick
  • Combination kicking — skip roundhouse kick, roundhouse kick and spinning back kick
  • Consecutive kicking — hook kick, roundhouse kick and axe kick
  • Jumping kicks — front, side, roundhouse
  • Front pushing kick — Mireo Chagi
  • Double kicking — side kick or roundhouse kick
What the panel watches

The kicks build in range within a combination: short, then medium, then long. Balance is graded between the kicks, not only during them.

Know this about the form

Sam-Jang is 20 movements, trigram Ri ☲, fire and the sun. The reference map for this rank is Taegeuk Sam-Jang; Taegeuk Sa-Jang is the 6th Kup form.

05 — HosinsulSelf defence

Theme at this rank: escaping and countering from collar grabs. Grabs may be called from any previous rank.

  • Single arm grab (×2)
  • Any two grabs from in front
  • Any two high attacks from the front
  • Choke from the front with two hands
  • Full nelson hold
Escaping the collar grab
  • Single hand collar grab — reach across and grab the back of the attacker's hand. Rotate it so their thumb is down. With your other hand, bend their elbow. Rotate their hand so the little finger turns towards their face while you take one step forward.
  • Or — grab the attacker's arm as if shaking hands with their elbow. Walk under your own arm and turn to their back, creating an arm lock.
  • Double hand collar grab / two-handed choke — one arm straight up in the air, the other on the attacker's hand. Bring the raised elbow down across their wrists while bending the knees and dropping your weight. Follow through with an elbow strike to the face, indicated.
Safety

Locks are applied slowly, to the point of control, and released on the signal. The choke escape is drilled with the attacker's hands on the collar, never on the throat. The throat, neck, temple, eyes and spine are never contacted, at any speed, at any rank.

08 — Il-bon KyorugiOne-step sparring

Attacking side — step back with the right leg, executing a low block, in preparation to start. Defending side — remain in Junbi until the attacking side commits.

One-Step 4From Attacker steps forward, middle punch in forward stance
  1. Move the left leg back into a right Juchum Seogi, blocking with a right hand Momtong An Makki
  2. Trap the opponent's hand with the left hand
  3. Right Palkup Yeop Chigi (side elbow strike) to the solar plexus — to a held pad
  4. Right Deungjumeok Chigi (back fist strike) to the face with the same hand — indicated

Elbow and back fist from one arm, one rotation. The trap is graded — without it the elbow has no range and the back fist has no target.

One-Step 5From Attacker steps forward, middle punch in forward stance
  1. Move the left leg back into a right Juchum Seogi, blocking with a right hand Momtong An Makki
  2. Trap the opponent's hand with the left hand
  3. Right high Mejumeok Chigi (hammer fist) to the temple — indicated
  4. Right Palkup Dollyeo Chigi (turning elbow strike) to the jaw — to a held pad

Same entry as One-Step 4, different finish — the pair is examined together so the candidate has to name which one was called. The temple is indicated at every age and speed.

One-Step 6From Attacker steps forward, high punch in forward stance
  1. Move 45° off the line with the right leg into forward stance
  2. Block with a left Momtong Bakkat Makki while simultaneously executing a right Palkup Ollyeo Chigi (upward elbow strike) to the chin — indicated
  3. Sweep the opponent under control
  4. Punch to the face — indicated

The first sweep on the syllabus. Matted surface, and the sweep is taken under control with the opponent's balance managed, never dropped.

09 — Moral cultureWisdom

Wisdom is knowing right from wrong — for others, and for yourself.

When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. If you listen, you may learn something new.

Dalai Lama

Any person capable of angering you becomes your master; he can anger you only when you permit yourself to be disturbed by him.

Epictetus

There are three solutions to every problem: accept it, change it, or leave it. If you cannot accept it, change it. If you cannot change it, leave it.
