01 — The rankWhat this grade asks of you

Students are often surprised that the first graded syllabus looks so long. It looks long because it carries everything after it — as you climb, your syllabus is the sum of every syllabus below it. This is the one that sets the habits.

Syllabus poomsaeKibon Il-Jang and Taegeuk Il-Jang — 18 movements, trigram Keon ☰
Time in grade2–3 months · 20 classes, minimum two sessions per week
Grading to8th Kup — Yellow Belt
New at this rankBack stance · knife hand block and strike · the first kicking combinations · three-step sparring
Belt meaningYellow signifies the earth from which the plant sprouts and takes root, as the Taekwondo foundation is being laid
Eligibility

Minimums are not entitlements. Regular attendance for 2–3 months at the instructor's discretion. Combined with the yellow belt test, a minimum of three months' training is usually required.

02 — KibonHand & combination techniques

Five combinations, five repetitions each, both sides. The examiner calls a number and you perform it without being talked through it.

How to read the sides

Every sequence is written left-lead — left foot forward — and is mirrored on command. Stances are named by the forward foot. The lead hand blocks and the rear hand strikes unless a step says otherwise.

Practise LEFT-LEAD
Combination 1From Left forward stance Ap KubiKick, block, counter
  1. Right rear-leg front kick Ap Chagi
  2. Land the right foot forward into right forward stance Ap Kubi → right low block Arae Makki
  3. Left reverse punch, rear hand Bandae Jireugi

The first sequence in the syllabus that goes kick → block → strike. Graded on the landing: the low block arrives as the foot settles, not after it.

Combination 2From Left walking stance Ap SeogiOuter forearm
  1. Left outer-forearm low block Momtong Bakkat Arae Makki
  2. Right rear-leg front kick Ap Chagi
  3. Land forward into right walking stance Ap Seogi → right middle punch Momtong Jireugi

Walking stance travels; the block does not stop the travel. Scored on whether the hips stay level through the kick.

Combination 3From Left back stance, left foot forward Dwit KubiNew stance
  1. Left single knife-hand outward middle block Hansonnal Momtong Bakkat Makki
  2. Hold the stance: about ⅔ of the weight on the rear leg, rear shoulder, hip and knee on one vertical line

Back stance is new at this rank and is the stance every later grade is examined on. Graded on the vertical line, not on the arm.

Combination 4From Left forward stance Ap KubiKnife hand
  1. Right inward knife-hand strike Sonnal An Chigiindicated
  2. Recover the hand to guard without dropping the elbow

The first open-hand strike on the syllabus. The line is indicated and stopped — the neck is never contacted at any rank.

Combination 5From Left-lead fighting stance Gyeorugi JunbiGuard
  1. Middle guarding block Momtong Goduro Makki
  2. Hold guard, weight even, and recover to fighting stance without dropping the hands

The guard you will use in every sparring round from here to black belt. Graded on the elbows, which stay in front of the ribs.

Age handling

Under-13 candidates substitute a Momtong Bandae Jireugi for any neck-line element and lose no marks for it. The chain is scored, not the omitted finish.

03 — ChagiKicking & footwork

All from fighting stance, moving forward, resetting to the starting position after each set. Five repetitions each.

  • Combination kicking — roundhouse ×2 and back kick
  • Combination kicking — front kick, roundhouse kick, axe kick
  • Consecutive kicking — front kick and roundhouse kick / in-out crescent kick and side kick
  • Jumping side kick
  • Hook kick ×5 · Axe kick ×5 · Back kick ×5
  • Double roundhouse kick — Narae Chagi ×5
What the panel watches

The kicks should build in range within a combination. Opening with a long-range kick makes your opponent retract, and the short-range kick that follows lands nowhere near them.

  • Single arm grab
  • Double lapel grab
  • Middle punch
  • Overarm grab from behind
Safety

Practised at partner speed, grip released on request. Nothing at this rank is applied to a joint under load. The throat, neck, temple, eyes and spine are never contacted, at any speed, at any rank.

08 — Sambon KyorugiThree-step sparring

Attacking side — step back with the right leg, executing a low block, in preparation to start. Defending side — remain in Junbi until the attacking side commits.

Three-Step 1From Attacker steps forward, middle punch in forward stance — three times
  1. Move back in forward stance with an inward block — three times, matching each step
  2. Step 45° to the attacker's left, off the line
  3. Two middle punches to the rib cage
  4. One high punch to the temple — indicated

The 45° step is the graded element — the defender leaves the line rather than retreating along it. Three blocks that travel straight back score nothing.

Three-Step 2From Attacker steps forward, high punch in forward stance — three times
  1. Move back in forward stance with a high block — three times
  2. Trap the opponent's hand
  3. Reverse punch to the face — indicated

The trap is what makes the counter safe to throw. A counter thrown without it is scored as an exchange, not a defence.

Three-Step 3From Attacker steps forward, middle punch in forward stance — three times
  1. Move backwards starting with the left leg into horse-riding stance, inward block with the right hand — three times, alternating
  2. Trap the attacker's hand with the left hand
  3. Outward knife hand strike to the neck with the right hand — indicated

Blocking from horse stance while travelling backwards is the difficulty. Graded on whether the stance height changes between the three blocks.

09 — Moral cultureRespect

The number one rule in Taekwondo is respect. At this rank it is examined as a list, and observed as a habit.

  • For one's self
  • To your parents
  • To siblings
  • To peers
  • To elders and people of authority

11 — Self-testTest yourself before you grade

Ten questions drawn at random from this syllabus, in the areas you are examined on. Nothing here is scored by the school — it is for finding the gaps while you still have time to close them.
